About Embassy of Ireland
The formal relationship between Ireland and Sierra Leone dates back to 2002. However, Irish missionaries first came to Sierra Leone over 150 years ago, establishing a relationship of friendship and solidarity that endures to this day.

The Embassy in Sierra Leone maintains a strong link between the Governments of Ireland and Sierra Leone, complemented greatly by visits from Irish Ministers of States and Irish Parliament’s Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade over the years.

The partnership is further strengthened through Irish Aid’s support to Sierra Leone, which includes financial and technical support to development priorities of the Government of Sierra Leone. Irish Aid also supports Sierra Leoneans to pursue post-graduate studies in Ireland on an annual basis.

The newly-published five-year Mission Strategy for Sierra Leone sets out Ireland’s ambition to deepen bilateral, political, economic and cultural cooperation between Ireland and Sierra Leone. The Strategy includes a budget of approximately €67 million over the period 2019 – 2023.

The strategy reflects our priorities across the five pillars of the Global Island: Ireland’s Foreign Policy for a Changing World – Our People, Our Values, Our Prosperity, Our Place in Europe, and Our Influence – contributing to the overarching goal of promoting Ireland’s values and interests in Sierra Leone, with a focus on the empowerment of women and girls.
