About Monuments & Relics Commission
The Monuments and Relics Commission (MRC) is a Sierra Leonean government agency that is responsible for the conservation, protection, and promotion of the country's cultural heritage. The agency was established in 1948, making it one of the oldest heritage preservation organizations in West Africa.

The MRC's mandate is to identify, protect, and preserve sites, structures, and objects of historical and cultural significance in Sierra Leone. These include national monuments, archaeological sites, cultural landscapes, and traditional artifacts. The agency also plays a key role in promoting public awareness of the importance of cultural heritage, through educational programs and public outreach activities.

One of the MRC's most significant initiatives is the National Monuments and Relics Act, which provides legal protection for cultural heritage sites and objects in Sierra Leone. The agency also works closely with other government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and international partners to implement conservation and preservation projects across the country.

In recent years, the MRC has been involved in a number of high-profile conservation projects, including the restoration of the historic Cotton Tree in Freetown, the preservation of the Bunce Island slave trade site, and the protection of the ancient rock art of Kono District. These efforts have not only helped to preserve Sierra Leone's rich cultural heritage, but also promote sustainable tourism and economic development in the country.
