About Schools of Sinkunia
The Schools of Sinkunia charity first began to grow in 1993. Greg Smith, who had previously served in the Peace Corps in Sierra Leone in 1974 and 1975, had established contact with the Paramount Chief, Almany Lahai V, in the far Northern Yalunka chiefdoms of Sierra Leone. Greg offered support to the chiefdom during the horrific 11 year long civil war, which finally ended in 2002. Greg was introduced to the Chief’s son, Sheiku Mansaray, and a friendship soon developed. A shared passion to support the people of Sinkunia soon flourished, and in 2008 a joint trip to Sierra Leone involving both the families of Greg and Sheiku was organised.

This resulted in the development of the Schools of Sinkunia charity – aiming to make a future for Sierra Leone and build educational opportunities. Since this time, the charity has welcomed many volunteers, from all backgrounds and areas of the globe, with strong presences in the US, and the UK where Greg and Sheiku live respectively.
