About L.A.W.Y.E.R.S.
L.A.W.Y.E.R.S is an acronym for Legal Access through Women Yearning for Equality Rights and Social Justice. It  has been in existence since the 14th of February 1997.
 
It is an organization of female lawyers who use the law to protect and promote the rights of women and girls in Sierra Leone, providing court representation for free to women and girls on a range of matters including matrimonial disputes, maintenance, sexual and domestic violence.
 
Over the years, L.A.W.Y.E.R.S has been part of various legal and social campaigns to eliminate discrimination against women including the First Lady of Sierra Leone’s ongoing campaign to end child marriage and rape in Sierra Leone.
 
Members of L.A.W.Y.E.R.S. have also been instrumental in the passage of key pieces of legislation such as the Child’s Rights Act [2007], the Domestic Violence Act [2007] and the Sexual Offences Act [2012].
 
L.A.W.Y.E.R.S also provided legal and technical support to Sierra Leone’s recent Constitutional Review Process and have been at the forefront of the campaign to have a Forensic Analysis Crime Detection Agency (FACDA) created in Sierra Leone. This would greatly strengthen crime detection and prevention in our country. L.A.W.Y.E.R.S also played an active part during Sierra Leone’s Ebola crisis through radio and television broadcasts and print and social media, to provide information about the disease and how it could be prevented.
